Safe Routes Act

FRA ACTION ALERT—Safe Routes Act—Contact Your Representative

The House Transportation & Infrastructure (T&I) Committee are drafting the surface transportation bill reauthorization for FY2021. FRA anticipates the bill to be introduced during March or early April. Our goal is to have the language of the bipartisan supported Safe Routes Act (HR 2453) included in the language of the Surface Transportation Bill Reauthorization. Your House Member must hear from you. Complete the action alert and send a letter to your Member of Congress that requests they contact the House T&I Committee leadership and urge them to include the Safe Routes Act in the reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Bill. It takes less than three minutes to complete.

If you have any questions, please contact FRA’s Director, Government Affairs Tim O’Hara, (218) 390-7965, or FRA President Deb Hawkinson, (202) 296-3937,

China halts tariffs on North American hardwoods

The Chinese government has announced it will remove tariffs on certain species of U.S. and Canadian hardwood lumber for one year, starting Feb. 28.

Published Feb. 21, the exemption lists several North American hardwoods, including cherry, ash, oak and "other" lumber and logs. In a note to its members, the National Hardwood Lumber Association said, "Work is underway to define exactly what that will mean for these products and what the definite tariff rate will be moving forward." The NHLA noted it would likely not have additional information for another few days.

Forestry/Poultry Career Day in Crenshaw County

Forestry companies – you are invited to attend one of our upcoming high school Forestry Days in Luverne, AL on March, 20th! You may be familiar with our typical forestry career days that we host around the state – this will be a very similar event, except in this case we have partnered with the Crenshaw County Conservation District and the Poultry Industry for a Farm & Forestry Career Fair (the same as we did last year in this location.) 10th, 11th and 12th grade students from Crenshaw County and surrounding areas will be attending.

This year the event will be held mostly outdoors, and provides tons of opportunities for student interaction with hands-on activities (looking at forest products, tree ID hikes, equipment displays, prescribed burn demos, and more…). Events like these are some of the best ways to introduce students to jobs in forestry and forestry related industries!

If you are interested in exhibiting at this years’ event or hosting a demonstration, please email Ashley Rowe or call 334-481-2136. Participation is free, however there are sponsorship opportunities available.
