Southeast’s Cumberland Plateau Region Receives $1.3 Million in Conservation Grants from NFWF to Support Forest and Stream Habitat Restoration


The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) today announced $1.3 million in grants to restore, enhance, and protect shortleaf pine, oak and riparian forests, and in-stream habitats for wildlife in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee. The grants will generate nearly $1.5 million in matching contributions for a total conservation impact of $2.8 million.

Rising Softwood Lumber Costs Lead Building Materials Prices Higher in June


Prices paid for goods used in residential construction increased 1.9% in June (not seasonally adjusted) according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is the second consecutive monthly increase since the index declined three months straight by a total 5.4%.

Homebuilder sentiment jumps back to pre-coronavirus pandemic high


To find a V-shaped recovery from the economic wreckage of the coronavirus pandemic, look to the nation’s single-family homebuilders.


Homebuilder sentiment jumped 14 points to 72 in July, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. That is exactly where it was in March, before the pandemic hit the U.S. economy. Anything above 50 is considered positive sentiment. The HMI plummeted to 30 in April.

Diageo to launch Johnnie Walker whisky in paper bottles in 2021


Johnnie Walker scotch whisky will be available in plastic-free bottles from early 2021, Diageo Plc said on Monday, as the world's biggest spirits maker ramps up efforts to tackle plastic waste.


The new bottle, developed in partnership with venture management company Pilot Lite, will be made from wood pulp that meets food grade standards and is fully recyclable, the Guinness and Tanqueray Gin maker said.

The U.S. Department of Labor today published additional guidance for workers and employers on how the protections and requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) affect the workplace as workplaces reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic. The guidance from the Department’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD) includes commonly asked questions and answers that address critical issues in all three laws.

Congressman Fred Keller urges House Leadership to consider additional measures to keep hardwood industry operational


Congressman Fred Keller (PA-12) sent a letter to House Leadership recommending additional relief for the hardwood industry, which continues to struggle due to the COVID-19 crisis.


“The U.S. hardwood industry is fully integrated from logging to manufacturing finished consumer goods including flooring, cabinets, and moldings,” the letter reads. “The tissue and paper supplies made of residual chips and dust and the industrial mats, shipping pallets, and railway ties made from hardwood lumber play a crucial role in helping our economy recover from the devastating impacts of COVID-19. Specifically, the hardwood industry is responsible for approximately 1.8 million jobs in mostly rural areas.”
