Logger training and education functions as a core mission of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative┬« Inc. (SFI).  The Alabama Professional Logging Manager (PLM) program strives to improve the practice of sustainable forestry through training and education programs for loggers as part of responsible fiber sourcing practices.  Participation in Alabama PLM is voluntary.    


 Developed by educators from Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, this 2-day course is offered to loggers over a 2-week period and covers:

  •  Sustainable forestry Initiative principles
  •  Best management practices for water quality
  •  Reforestation, invasive exotic plants and animals, forest resource conservation, aesthetics and special sites
  •  U.S. Endangered Species Act and measures to protect wildlife habitat
  •  Logging Safety
  •  OSHA regulations, wage and hour rules, and other employment laws
  •  Transportation issues
  •  Business management
  •  Public policy and outreach
  •  Awareness of emerging technologies

Following the completion of the initial training course, cardholders should complete FIVE hours continuing education each year to maintain Professional Logging Manager status.
